Diabolik Lovers is a fantastic choice for viewers who enjoy dark romance, as it centers those elements and plays them up. In this respect, Diabolik Lovers is no different from franchises like 50 Shades of Grey, Twilight, or hundreds of other supernatural romance series, all of which feature relationships that would be considered toxic in real life. Part of the thrill of harem romance stories is enjoying that kind of exciting, idealized fantasy. Many romance anime feature relationships that would be considered taboo or dysfunctional if they occurred in the real world. While the relationship dynamics seen in Diabolik Lovers are problematic, with the Sakamaki brothers being outwardly and viciously abusive toward Yui, this isn't that unusual.
This would be doubly true for American fans as the English dub released on DVD in 2014, at a time when few pure-shojo series received official dubs. Plenty of anime fans then likely loved being catered to this explicitly, explaining why the show became so popular. While the brothers and their outfits may look dated and silly today, these archetypes and fashion styles were stunningly popular during this era. The Sakamaki clan features a lazy artist, an arrogant boy with a heart of gold, a delinquent, a cheerful pervert, and a childish neurotic. This is most noticeable in the character designs, as each of the Sakamaki brothers is designed to conform to a male romance archetype that was popular at the time.
As a shojo reverse harem story, it's clear that every element was designed to appeal to a specific facet of that genre's audience. One reason for Diabolik Lovers' popularity is how it fits into its genre and how targeted it is. Even worse, Yui starts to develop intense bouts of chest pain, leaving her even more vulnerable.
However, the brothers are frequently abusive toward Yui - and each other - and will use everything at their disposal to get what they want. Because of this, Yui finds herself trapped with the vampires, as each tries to seduce her and claim her as their own so they may eventually sacrifice her. The Sakamaki clan are all vampires, and they believe she is the sacrificial bride they've been promised.
